Red Flags

"It's like Sex and the City with more drama and for younger kids...It's kind of like what you want life to be." -- 14-year-old fan Layla Alter, eagerly anticipating the new season of the CW network's program Gossip Girl (Reuters, July 31, 2008)(Parents TV council email)

Does this quote alarm anybody?! You can not tell me that what we watch on TV does not have an effect on society as a whole.

Children between the ages of 13 and 17 spend an average of 33.35 days a year in front of a television or movie screen-- IMMI data research organization (www.immi.com, August 3, 2007)(Parents TV council email)

Just imagine the amount of good that could be done in the world if we put the 13-17 year olds to work on a humanitarian project for 1 month every year. Imagine the self esteem boost for this vulnerable age group if they spent time helping other people.

How much more time is spent in front of computers?
