National Study from Common Sense Media Documents Media Use by Children Ages 0 to 8

Did you read to your kids today? Did you hand over your iPhone at the grocery store? If so, you're not alone.

How families use media and what it means for kids' health and well-being is the subject of Zero to Eight: Children's Media Use in America, the first study by Common Sense Media's new Program for the Study of Children and Media. The report is featured in both theNew York Times and the San Francisco Chronicletoday.

The study shows that everything from iPods to smartphones to tablet computers

are now a regular part of kids' lives, with kids

under 8 averaging two hours a day with all screen media.

Among the key findings:

42% of children under 8 years old have a
television in their bedroom.
Half (52%) of all 0- to 8-year-olds have access to
a new mobile device, such as a smartphone,
video iPod, or iPad/tablet.
More than a third (38%) of children this age
have used one of these devices, including
10% of 0-to 1-year-olds, 39% of 2- to 4-year-olds,
and more than half (52%) of 5- to 8-year-olds.
In a typical day, one in 10 (11%) 0- to 8-year-olds
uses a smartphone, video iPod, iPad, or similar device
to play games, watch videos, or use other apps.
Those who do such activities spend an average
of 43 minutes a day doing so.

Clearly, media has become a staple in young kids' daily lives

and influences them in ways we don't yet fully understand.

But by getting involved in your kid's media life, you can help

them create healthy lifelong patterns that will truly make a

difference in their lives:

Balance the types of media your kids are exposed to.
Choose age-appropriate, quality content that reinforces
your family's values.
Watch, play, read, and listen with your kids. Don't underestimate

NBC Cancels The Playboy Club

JC Penney Ad

This letter just came out from On Million Moms - a great organization.

JC Penney has just released a new television commercial, straying far away from the namesake's values and principles.

The 30-second ad, "It is Seriously Hot in Here," negatively portrays women as little more than sexual eye-candy for a men's clothing pitch.

Please take action!

The announcer says, "We get it. Guys don't like watching ads for clothes. So here's the deal: you take a look at these great styles, we promise to show you something really awesome. That way, everybody wins."

The screen then splits with a larger part of the screen dedicated to a bikini-clad model "strutting her stuff." Just before the scene ends, she reaches up, as if undoing her top. The announcer then states, "It is seriously hot in here."

JC Penney's ad choice is blatantly disrespectful to all women, especially mothers and wives.

TAKE ACTION

Let's stop this commercial dead in its tracks. If JC Penney gets away with this, their ads will only get worse.

Make a personal phone call to JC Penney's customer service department. Tell them, unequivocally, that this ad is offensive to women and should be pulled immediately.

Glee actors pose in scantily clad GQ magazine. Does it matter? Does it affect our children and teenagers? Here is a quote from a great article from commonsense.org about these questions.

In the United States, marriages fell to a record low in 2009, with 52 percent of adults 18 and over saying they were joined in wedlock, compared to 57 percent in 2000.

The never-married included 46.3 percent of young adults 25-34, with sharp increases in single people in cities in the Midwest and Southwest, including Cleveland, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Albuquerque. It was the first time the share of unmarried young adults exceeded those who were married.

Marriages have been declining for years due to rising divorce, more unmarried couples living together, and increased job prospects for women. But sociologists say younger people are also now increasingly choosing to delay marriage as they struggle to find work and resist making long-term commitments.

Pentagon reverserses decision and will investigate child pornography viewed by Dept of Defense employees

In a reversal, the Pentagon says it will reopen hundreds of cases of alleged purchases of child pornographyby Department of Defense employees that Pentagon officials previously declined to investigate, The Upshot has learned.

Earlier this month, The Upshot reported exclusively that in 2007, investigators for the Defense Criminal Investigative Service obtained a list of 264 military service members, civilian employees and contractors for the Department of Defense who had used credit cards or PayPal to purchase access to a child pornography website. But the DCIS, citing scarce resources, pursued only 52 of the names before closing the project -- known as Project Flicker -- in 2008. Since no further public information on the cases was made available, it appears that the other people on the list of suspected child-pornography patrons were able to continue their careers without any interruption that stemmed from the investigation.

But today, the Pentagon official in charge of DCIS told The Upshot that he has ordered the remaining cases reopened. "I have tasked Defense Criminal Investigative Service representatives with reviewing each and every Project Flicker and related referral DCIS received so as to ensure action was taken regarding these allegations involving employees of the Department of Defense," Deputy Inspector General for Investigations James Burch said in the statement Wednesday.

Burch announced his decision to revisit the cases, which had been abandoned for two years, in response to inquiries from The Upshot.

The OffenderWatch database will enable citizens anywhere in the City to view maps and register for notifications concerning offenders that live in areas that are of interest to the viewer. These notifications will be sent to the citizen via their e-mail address. They will be alerted if an offender should register an address within the preferred radius of the citizen's registered address. They can also be notified if a specific offender moves from his or her present address. Citizens may register as many addresses as they like, at no cost to them. These addresses can include homes, work addresses, parks, playgrounds, bus stops, etc.. The purpose of the program is to promote sex offender awareness by proactively alerting the citizens of Mesa should an offender move within close proximity to them.

Pentagon declined to investigate hundreds of purchases of child pornography

A 2006 Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigation into the purchase of child pornography online turned up more than 250 civilian and military employees of the Defense Department -- including some with the highest available security clearance -- who used credit cards or PayPal to purchase images of children in sexual situations. But the Pentagon investigated only a handful of the cases, Defense Department records show.

The cases turned up during a 2006 ICE inquiry, called Project Flicker, which targeted overseas processing of child-porn payments. As part of the probe, ICE investigators gained access to the names and credit card information of more than 5,000 Americans who had subscribed to websites offering images of child pornography. Many of those individuals provided military email addresses or physical addresses with Army or fleet ZIP codes when they purchased the subscriptions.

In a related inquiry, the Pentagon's Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) cross-checked the ICE list against military databases to come up with a list of Defense employees and contractors who appeared to be guilty of purchasing child pornography. The names included staffers for the secretary of defense, contractors for the ultra-secretive National Security Agency, and a program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. But the DCIS opened investigations into only 20 percent of the individuals identified, and succeeded in prosecuting just a handful.

The Boston Globe first reported the Pentagon's role in Project Flicker in July, citing DCIS investigative reports (PDF) showing that at least 30 Defense Department employees were investigated.

But new Project Flicker investigative reports obtained by The Upshot through the Freedom of Information Act,which you can read here, show that DCIS investigators identified 264 Defense employees or contractors who had purchased child pornography online. Astonishingly, nine of those had "Top Secret Sensitive Compartmentalized Information" security clearances, meaning they had access to the nation's most sensitive secrets. All told, 76 of the individuals had Secret or higher clearances. But DCIS investigated only 52 of the suspects, and just 10 were ever charged with viewing or purchasing child pornography. Without greater public disclosure of how these cases wound down, it's impossible to know how or whether any of the names listed in the Project Flicker papers came in for additional scrutiny. It's conceivable that some of them were picked up by local law enforcement, but it seems likely that most of the people flagged by the investigation did not have their military careers disrupted in the context of the DCIS inquiry.

Millions of kids saw Toy Story 3 earlier this summer, and many were frightened by the scene in which the toys are heading toward almost certain death on the incinerator's conveyor belt. But it was another scene in that movie that made my hair stand on end: It's when Ken first meets Barbie, and the song Dream Weaver ("I believe you can get me through the night") starts to play. Ken says to Barbie, "Love your legwarmers," and Barbie purrs, "Nice ass-cot."

There it was: another one of those sexy zingers designed to make parents laugh and sail over kids' head. Turns out my parental instincts were right.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, sex -- and its cheeky cousin, innuendo -- doesn't go over kids' head. In fact, the AAP's new report, "Sexuality, Contraception, and the Media," says that exposure to sexual content in TV and other media in early adolescence can as much as double kids' risk of early sexual intercourse.

Perhaps more importantly, what kids aren't seeing -- consequences for risky sexual behavior and messages about healthy sexual relationships -- also negatively impacts their behavior and attitudes about sex.

According to the report, having a TV in a child's bedroom is associated with early teen sexual activity. On the other hand, adolescents whose parents limit their TV viewing are less likely to engage in early sex.

But let's be clear: The occasional sexual reference or sexual dysfunction ad isn't going to hurt your kid. And while no parent wants their kids to learn about sex from animated movies, explaining to them that lovey-dovey stuff is often exaggerated in movies and TV to get attention helps counteract those sexy messages.

As kids get older, the conversations get a little less comfortable (as when my then-10-year-old asked me what a three-way was after he saw a joke on TV about a sexual triangle involving a bicycle built for three). But offering a counterpoint to the exaggerated notions of sex that kids see is one of the keys to helping them develop a healthy attitude about sex.

What You Can Do

There are a few other things parents can do, according the AAP:

Take the TV out of the bedroom. Bedroom TVs have been identified as a risk factor for early sexual behavior -- and don't forget kids can watch TV on their computers, too.

Recognize the impact of media in kids' lives. Don't buy the excuse that racy jokes go over kids' heads. What kids hear and see affects their lives socially, emotionally, and physically.

Help them make age-appropriate choices. Kids get excited about movies and TV shows that are being marketed to them. But check our reviews first, and find age-appropriate alternatives to movies and TV shows you don't think they're ready for.

AZFC President on OSTWG Report

The past year I have been working with the Online Safety and Technology Working Group that was commissioned by the U.S. Congress to report on the latest findings and recommendations about the safety of children while online. Many good things have come from the report, especially useful in the world of analysis and academia.

For parents however, the report says what we know: the Internet and technology are changing faster than we can keep up with and make rules for; children are so immersed in technology they hardly separate virtual from reality, and schools need to use technology that is available and educate children on digital citizenship.

Because the report is trying to be forward thinking, it does not address the issues that still are haunting and frustrated families and educators: explicit material being shoved into our homes, on our phones, and child's phones no matter how we try to stop it, and places of education that have become sexually charged environments due to the overwhelming amount of explicit content accessible by children on the Internet.

Parents, schools, the technology industry, and the government should realize that children accessing pornography intentionally and inadvertently most certainly continues to be a significant danger to our children online. Families, parents, and schools struggle to keep explicit content and all its consequences away from children.

It is true that this is not a new problem, or a fashionable one. But the fashionable ones like cyberbullying and sexting are often just consequences of children viewing, mimicking, sharing, and producing their own forms of pornography.

Until the technology industry and the government take serious action to empower parents and schools, children will be exposed to the harmful effects of pornography.

A survey of 500 children by broadband provider, TalkTalk, reported some alarming statistics:

1 in 4 children have sent or been sent inappropriate material including pornography via email
1 in 20 children, aged between 6 & 15, had communicated with a stranger via webcam
1 in 50 children have actually met a stranger they first contacted online
over 6 out of 10 children said they lie to parents about what they have been looking at online
over 5 out of 10 children delete the history on their browser, so their parents can't see what they have been looking at.

"The report, . . . found that many children are getting away with behaviour online that they wouldn't get away with in the real world, largely because of their parents' lack of understanding and awareness of their internet habits and of safety precaution."

Daily Media Use Among Children and Teens Rises Dramatically

Media use by children and teens (ages 8-18) is up an hour and seventeen minutes from what it used to be 5 years ago, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation study released today. And that doesn't include texting!

This study also reveals other astonishing stats:

1. Only about 3 in 10 young people say they have rules about how much time they can spend- watching TV, playing video games, or using the computer.

2. 64% of young people say the TV is usually on during meals.

3. 71% have a TV in their bedroom.

4. 50% have video games console in their bedroom.

5. 47% of heavy media users usually get poor grades (mostly Cs and lower) while only 23% of light media users get poor grades.

6. 7th-12th graders spend an average of 1 hour and 35 minutes texting each day.

7. Because children can "media multitask", the 7+ hours a day they spend on media are equivalent to 10 hours and forty five minutes.

“The bottom line is that all these advances in media technologies are making it even easier for young people to spend more and more time with media,” said Victoria Rideout, Foundation Vice President and director of the study. “It’s more important than ever that researchers, policymakers and parents stay on top of the impact it’s having on their lives.”

Leading analysts are projecting the iPhone and iPod Touch will be the top-selling holiday gift items this season. Both the iPod Touch and the iPhone have fully functional and unfiltered web browsers that can access all Internet content, including sites unsuitable for children.

"A lot of parents aren't conditioned to think of the iPhone as a computer, but younger users can access the same content from their phone as they can from a PC or Mac," said Forrest Collier, CEO of InternetSafety.com. Collier believes parents buy these devices, not fully understanding that their child could be exposed to harmful content. "We are encouraging parents to act ahead of a potential problem by installing a child-safe browser prior to giving the devices to children."

Earlier in the year, Apple introduced a form of parental controls to the iPhone and iPod Touch, which allows parents to limit downloading apps and music based on age. However, no age-related restrictions were placed on the standard Safari browser to limit a child's access to Internet content not controlled by Apple.

What Every Parent Should Know About Web Filters

7. They don't catch everything. Most parental control programs use a combination of filtering techniques to block access to unwanted sites. But each method is vulnerable, and none promises 100% accuracy.

6. They catch too much. Text-based filters can't really determine the context of words or phrases, so they can block access to perfectly acceptable sites. Words like "sucking," for example, might get caught in the filter and prevent your kid from researching, say, mosquitoes.

5. Kids can defeat them. When determined, technically savvy kids meet filters, they find ways to disable them. In fact, there are Internet discussion groups devoted solely to this purpose.

But whether it's porn, politics, or potato farming, you'll have to confront these issues whether or not your kid can access them on the computer.

1. There's always a friend's computer. You have little if any control over what your kid can do on someone else's computer. So talk about responsible Internet use. Tell little kids not to click on something that looks inappropriate. Talk to older kids about the desensitizing effects of seeing too much violence and porn. Guide them toward the better things the Internet has to offer.

I couldn't wait until next week to make this post. Not because it's good news, but because I needed to vent. The implications are incalcuable. This is code red.

The world's largest adult entertainment company, Vivid, has requested from Sony to approve porn to be available on the PlayStation. Apparently, Sony allows Japan to download porn from the HD network and, consequently, Vivid feels that Sony will accept their request.

Vivid's excuse for protecting children under 18 from accessing the porn? Age verification. Any parent, knows that with 1 click on the computer, any child can deceive the age verification process. It only gives adults a false sense of security if there is age verification. Let's face it, our tween and teens are way more tech savvy then their parents. Age verification is not the answer.

Many of us know that MySpace is a cesspool for porn and spammers. Have you thought about Facebook and Twitter?

Unfortunately, even Facebook and Twitter are subjected to pornography. In an article from MSNBC, wherever the action is, that is where the pornographers will go. In fact Twitter has grown over 1000% in just over year. Facebook has now reached 65 million active users which means 65 million people have downloaded the Facebook app to their cell phone.

I regularly update the AZFC Twitter page. I have seen porn on Twitter. It was a simple picture of a girl who wanted to follow my tweets. I accepted and in turn, followed her tweets. When I went to her page to find out who wanted to follow us, I was blown away at the inappropriate material and links to 'live shows.'

A friend of mine who runs the Girls Against Porn website told me her Facebook group was up. I searched for Girls Against Porn on Facebook and couldn't believe at the amounts of pornography on Facebook.

The moral of this post is, do not be deceived. Most of you are on Facebook and ALL your children definitely are. Porn on Twitter and Facebook is 1 click away.

This week, President Obama is addressing the nation's students while they are at school. He has also sent out lesson plans to each school asking that teachers follow his remarks with the lesson outline.

We respect the Office of the President of the United States and appreciate that President Obama wants to encourage students to stay in school and to make education a priority in their lives. However, we believe that rather than addressing the students during the school day, it would be more beneficial to families if President Obama would have addressed the students during prime time on national television, when parents could choose to watch his address in their homes with their children, and have a chance to discuss the President’s ideas around the dinner table.

Because the President has chosen to address the students during the day, we would encourage parents to:

*Ask your school how it is planning to handle the speech and the discussion afterward.

*Rather than pull your students from the classroom during the President's address, take the opportunity, where possible, to go and sit with your children in the classroom and where appropriate take part in the discussion.

*If you are unable to go to the classroom, please read President Obama’s speech online and discuss it with your child before he/she goes to school. Students of all ages will benefit from this discussion.

Memory Cards Can Be A Danger

Unfortunately kids can be exposed to pornography in many, many ways – even just turning on a “new” Sony PSP can be dangerous. A family in Florida found this out first hand when they bought a PSP from Wal-mart earlier this year. Six-year-old Eliso Tovar turned on the machine and the screensaver was an image of a naked woman. Evidently the PSP’s memory card from a previous owner had not been removed before the machine was resold to the Tovars. Hundreds of pornographic images were on the memory card and available for any child to view. Eliso thought he would get in trouble so he took the PSP to his mother crying. She was understandably outraged and demanded an apology and a new PSP from Wal-mart.

It is important to be aware that any game console or hand-held device that uses a memory card could contain pornographic images. It is a good idea to check these memory cards when new items are purchased, and also be aware of the content of these cards as your kids play. Also be aware when your kids are borrowing and sharing memory cards that belong to friends and other people. Kids’ electronic games can be great entertainment, but diligence by parents will ensure that they are not exposed to harmful images as they have fun.

Apple and the iPhone

Apple has recently approved a new App for iTunes. By doing this, Apple is allowing parents to test the new parental control application on the iPhone.

The way to test the new parental control is for a mere $2 you can download pornography and then check to see if the parental controls blocks it or not on the iPhone. If it does block it, then the App disappears. However, the minute you turn off the parental controls, the pornography App reappears on the screen.

Be aware when you download the 3.0 software update that this feature is included.

This now opens an entirely new market to the adult entertainment industry to sell their product.

Please contact Apple and ask them to halt the sale of pornography.

In a recent training program at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Herbert Benson, M.D. addressed some of the effects of cybersex addictions.
"Most of the cases discussed, which covered hundreds of individuals in therapy, found that initially pornography is rewarding in terms of sexual desires. However, the research revealed that as the addiction increased most of the addicts involved in pornography develop a great distaste for the pornography itself, but are unable to release themselves from it because of the escalating crescendo of addictive patterns."

"Progressive acting out of deviant sexual conduct. . causes people to abandon normal marital relations, including normal sexual relationships, in favor of indulging their severe addiction."

Bing is a new search engine recently launched by Microsoft. The major problem with Bing is that it has brought pornography directly into your home or office. Porn is no longer a few clicks away.

When you search on Bing, you no longer have to click to go to a different website to view porn. All you have to do is roll over the thumbnail image of the video on the video will begin to play snippets of the pornographic video.

Imagine the harmful effects if a child is searching on Bing and merely rolls over the image and instantly the child is watching a porn video.

This is completely unacceptable and irresponsible of Microsoft to launch a program such as this without a solution to block pornographic videos.

DO NOT USE BING AND ESPECIALLY DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN SEARCH ON BING!!

YouTube flooded with porn

You probably didn't know that Wednesday was declared 'Porn Day' on YouTube. YouTube had an onslaught of porn clips uploaded to the video sharing website even though YouTube has a filter system and a team of employees dedicating to removing porn. The porn videos were tagged with kid friendly names like the Jonas Brothers.

YouTube has removed the videos, but it may take a few days for all of the images to be deleted.

Arizona Internet Crimes Against Children Growing

According to the Arizona Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force there is a growing number of Internet crimes against children in Arizona: 2001-2008.

Arizona reports of Internet crimes against children have grown dramatically in the past several years. In 2008, the Arizona ICAC received 4,222 reported incidents, up from 832 in 2007. Most of the reports involved either unlawful images depicting the sexual exploitation of minors or the luring of minors for sexual exploitation.

The numbers highlight the need for increased enforcement of these serious crimes.

The Arizona Family Council announced that its president, Jeremy Geigle, has been appointed to serve on the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s Online Safety and Technology Working Group – a working group with the charge of keeping children and families safe online.

Geigle was appointed as one among thirty other private sector groups and child and family advocacy leaders from across the nation. These members will work with federal agencies to evaluate and make recommendations on how to increase and implement safety online.

“Now is the time to do all we can to educate, implement technology, and save our children from the danger that lurks online. I am honored to collaborate with members off this working group, who have children’s online safety as a first priority.”

As an attorney, Mr. Geigle has worked with juveniles that have been victimized by online adult content and child pornography. As president of AZ Family Council, he has introduced legislation to protect children online and worked to educate and empower families, parents, and the community in dealing with Internet safety.

America is raising a generation of children on porn - and your child just might be one of them. According to the London School of Economics, nine out of 10 teens who go online will view pornography. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that 70 percent of those who viewed porn stumbled across it - many while innocently doing their homework - and had not been looking for it.

She goes on to say that using a filter can help. She recommends Bsafe.com which costs $50 per year. This filter sends you an email regarding the websites that your computer visits.

What's a parent to do about cell phones? Filtering is not an application on cell phones. Is there ANYTHING a parent can do to? YES! There is some help. I just found a group that can help parents MONITOR their child's activity on cell phones. It's called MY MOBILE WATCHDOG.

Parents- Check out this device for your children's cell phone. You must have it! You can approve certain numbers that your children can talk to you. You can see the images that are texted to your child.

This tool enables parents to know who your child is talking to and texting. Don't worry about being your child's friend. They need a loving parent who educates them and protects them.

Just another unfortunate story to validate the research that shows that the average age of the first pornographic exposure is 11 years old. For all you parents that have children about 11 years old, it is not too late to begin discussing the consequences viewing and sharing pornographic images. Please take the time, TODAY, to sit down with your children. Our children are being prosecuted as adults for distributing pornographic images on the computer and cell phones. Do you want your 11 year old child to be registered as a sex offender for the rest of their lives? Be a parent to your child and talk to them about the consequences of viewing this destructive, salacious material.

This news story also confirms, yet again, that filters do not work. Filters are not the answers to keeping pornography out of your child's hands.

This is a bizarre story. But when you are addicted to child pornography, your reality becomes distorted as in this case. It goes to show how far people will go to get their fix. I am so relieved the authorities didn't find any victims of sexual abuse at the school!!

Youthful-looking man attempted to enroll in several Arizona schools

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - A youthful-looking sex offender who posed as a 12-year-old boy to enroll in several Arizona schools was sentenced to 70.5 years in prison Tuesday.

Neil Havens Rodreick II pleaded guilty last year to seven criminal charges. Most involved child pornography but two stemmed from the charade he pulled off for two years.

Authorities didn't find any victims of sexual abuse at the schools Rodreick attended, but they found an extensive collection of child pornography at his home.

Rodreick originally faced 28 counts, but pleaded guilty to only a quarter of them: four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor stemming from the pornography, and one count each of failure to register as a sex offender, fraud and simple assault. The assault charge involved an allegation that he grabbed a girl's buttocks at a school in Prescott Valley with the intent to injure, insult or provoke.

Contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (email address: proposedrescission@hhs.gov), or call the White House (202-456-1111) to express your concerns over Pres. Obama's proposal to rescind the conscience rule.

The conscience rule allows healthcare workers to refuse to perform services (like abortion) that conflict with their deeply-held, personal, religious beliefs. If this is rescinded, medical professionals could lose their jobs or could have their professional licenses revoked for refusing to perform these kinds of services.

As a society, we need medical professionals who have the courage to live according to their beliefs! We need their compassion, their integrity, their dignity, their medical skills, their experience, and their passion for their jobs! The liberties and freedoms championed by the United States of America should allow private citizens to perform their occupations according to their religious beliefs.

Exploiting Children

Is there anything more horrific than exploiting an innocent child? Unfortunately, this has been a major problem in the travel industry. In an upcoming conference by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives(ACTE) who have partnered with ECPAT-USA this will problem will be discussed.

In the flyer distributed by ECPAT-USA it says:

“As the leading educator for the global business travel industry, ACTE has a responsibility to inform and educate travel management professionals about issues such as the sexual exploitation of children,” Susan Gurley, ACTE Executive Director, said. “Partnering with organizations like ECPAT allows us to offer conference attendees valuable information about what their companies and travellers can do to ensure they are not unknowingly contributing to this pernicious problem.”

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to partner with ACTE,” noted Carol Smolenski, Executive Director of ECPAT-USA. “We have a difficult subject to talk about, but we know that a lot of companies, like Carlson Companies and Accor, are taking the lead in preventing the sexual exploitation of children. Our job is to provide support and technical assistance and we’re happy to work with ACTE on spreading the word."

Obscene Movies at College Campuses

At 2 college campuses student groups were planning on showing pornographic movies. At the University of Maryland, Digital Playground who produced the movie Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge gave it to the student union for free thereby allowing the movie students fees to not finance it. Because lawmakers threatened to cut funding for the university, officials decided to cancel the screening of the movie. (Story here)

The UC Davis student group announced on their Facebook page their viewing of the hard-core pornographic film. Because this is not paid for by university funds, the UC Davis says they do not censor movies.

The reality is that both of these colleges are degrading women by showing pornographic films on campus. They are also endorsing pornography which we know is addictive and permanently alters the brain.

What are you going to do when your college shows a pornographic movie? It has already been shown at 5 other colleges without any problems. We must not let this obscene trend continue.

Although we expected David Ogden to get a majority of votes in the Senate, it was still a disappointing day to all those who believe pornography is destructive and harmful. Ogden's past clearly demonstrates that he will be sympathetic to pornographers since he has close ties to them by representing them. I have low expectations in that Ogden will not prosecute obscenity and he will not uphold the existing obscenity laws. This was a step back for families.

Both Jon Kyl and John McCain voted for David Ogden. This seems very out of character for both Senators. I have personally met with Jon Kyl and discussed his commitment to fighting pornography. I have called and emailed both senators for an explanation of their vote. I will keep you updated when I receive a response.

New Study Links Music to Teen Sex

Parents have another compelling reason to monitor the music their teens are consuming. A new study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh indicates teenagers who listen to sexually aggressive lyrics are twice as likely to have sexual intercourse.

The lead researcher of the study, Dr. Brian A. Primack, said, "This study demonstrates that, among this sample of young adolescents, high exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex in popular music was independently associated with higher levels of sexual behavior.

"In fact, exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex was one of the strongest associations with sexual activity...These results provide further support for the need for additional research and educational intervention in this area."

Sen. Arlen Specter, the committee's ranking Republican, reportedly told National Public Radio he had never seen so much opposition from voters — 11,000 phone calls, letters and other contacts with the committee.

Just when you think you've seen it all. . .Southwest Airlines has put a decal of a Sports Illustrated swim suit model on the ENTIRE airplane. This is just despicable. Do you know how Southwest Airlines views this? The title of their blog post is -Raising the Bar.

"This plane, N922WN, is wrapped with a temporary decal featuring the cover model, from the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. This definitely seals the deals on Southwest Airlines’ FUN and edgy factor!" (SWA blog)

Why does an airline business promote the Sports Illustrated Issue? There are serious problems with this. The obvious problems of sexualizing women and not protecting our young children from images.

I wanted to put a picture on this post, but I will spare you the image.

Unfortunately, after all the calls and emails, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to approve David Ogden by a vote of 14-5. His name will now be sent to the full Senate for a confirmation vote.

I never had intentions of becoming a regular Facebook user. Now that I have a Facebook page, I've had a great time reconnecting with some old friends and keeping in touch with people I talk with regularly. I never would have imagined which friends I would meet up with. I guess it's important to be nice to everyone in Jr. High & High School, because you'll reconnect with them on Facebook.

Parents, your kids likely have a Facebook page. Have you asked them? Do you have one yourself? Have you talked about Internet safety with them? Now is the time. Here's some advice from Common Sense Media to get you up to speed.

Facebook. Our teens love it. We hear lots of negative things about it -- the sex, the bad behavior, the drinking pictures, the irresponsibility. And all that stuff can be there. But Facebook can also be a great way for kids to stay in touch with their friends and showcase their interests (and have fun). Take a look at our 90 second video because it will help you learn the essentials for creating your own page. Once you do that, you can ask your kids to link to you. Even if they don't, there's nothing like understanding how something works to lessen our anxieties. Read our review, watch the video, then have fun exploring.

Tips for "friending" on Facebook

Start with your kids' age. If they're in middle school, it may be a sound policy to know what they're posting, since kids that age don't necessarily understand that they're creating a digital footprint that will long outlast the passions of the moment.

Talk to your high school-aged teens about whether or not they're comfortable letting you friend them. Many will be. This is a case of "know your kid," and it comes down to trust. But establish rules: No drug talk, no nudity, no pictures of drinking, no hate speech, no bullying, and no posting party locations -- all of these lead to ruin. Most of all, remind your teens that whatever they post will be in the cyberworld forever. (Keep watching Facebook's Terms of Service, by the way, since a recent -- and almost as recently recanted -- update said that the company owned everything anyone posted forever.)

Don't fill your kids' pages with your comments. As it is, simply having parents is mortifying enough at this age. Their friends don't need evidence of your existence (and you can always send them private messages).

Don't friend your kids' friends. See reasons above.

Remember: They can see what you post. If you're a friend, also be a role model. Keep your nose clean.

Choose your battles. You will see the good, the bad, and the truly unfathomable. If you don't want your kids to unfriend you, don't comment on every transgression. Keep it general.

Remember, you're the parent. Even if you aren't your kids' Facebook "friend," your job is still to pass your values along to them and to help them learn how to be safe and responsible on or offline.

Porn Filmed at a Local Park

We already know that it is easier and easier to view porn and for our children to gain access to inappropriate material. However, it is almost shocking that our children could be exposed just by going to the local neighborhood park at the wrong moment.

In Bartlett, Tennessee, a public neighborhood park was recently used as the setting for an adult web-site porno shoot. Evidently the web-site that filmed the pornographic video promises to visit other public places as well.

Neighbors were understandably upset when they found out about the shoot. I'm sure they worried about their children and even themselves if they had come upon the scene inadvertently. When asked about his reaction, the minister that lives across the street from the park said, "I don't have the words. I'm a Baptist minister and I have no words."

The police in Bartlett are investigating the incident and have indicated that several laws have been broken - one of them being public indecency.

It is heartbreaking to know that no matter how well we try to protect our children from the harm of pornography, they could walk right into it as they go to play on the slide at the park. It makes me realize just how vigilant I must be in protecting my children.
